Still Under Construction (But Standing)…

Daily writing prompt
Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

Still Under Construction (But Standing)…

Oh, that’s easy… and also slightly unhinged when I look back at it.

The most ambitious DIY project I ever attempted wasn’t something from a hardware store. It didn’t involve wood, tiles, or paint samples spread across a kitchen table.

It was rebuilding a life while I was still standing inside the ruins of it.

There was no instruction manual. No reassuring video explaining the steps. Just me, a pile of emotional debris, and a stubborn refusal to believe that this was how things were supposed to stay.

I’ve painted walls. Restored furniture. Fixed things that probably should’ve been left to professionals. But none of that compares to the slow, invisible work of rebuilding yourself.

Learning boundaries when you were raised without them is demolition work. Learning to be calm when chaos feels familiar is like rewiring. Learning that rest isn’t failure, that’s structural reinforcement. Learning that love isn’t supposed to hurt, that it is rebuilding the foundation.

And the thing about ambitious projects is that halfway through, everything looks worse than when you started. Dust everywhere. Pieces missing. Nothing finished. You wonder if you’ve made a terrible mistake.

But if you keep going… something shifts.

Light starts getting in. The structure holds. You realize you’re not just surviving inside the space anymore, you’re living in it.

That project is still ongoing, by the way. No grand reveal. No before-and-after photos. Just quiet upgrades: a stronger spine, a softer heart, better instincts, more peace.

Turns out… I was the project.

Messy build. No regrets.

Would rebuild again.
