Ireland Today: The Land of Potholes and Empty Promises….

Ireland Today… What a State…

We used to be called the land of saints and scholars. Now we’re the land of potholes, half-built houses, crumbling hospitals, and politicians who wouldn’t know an honest day’s work if it bit them.

Families are drowning under the cost of living. You walk into the shop for a bit of bread, milk, and butter, and come out €20 lighter. Rent is a joke, mortgages are a nightmare, and young people are leaving in droves just like in the old days. They call it “opportunity abroad.” I call it being pushed out of your own country.

Farmers, the backbone of this land, are being strangled by rules dreamt up in Brussels and nodded along by our government. Told how to farm by people who never pulled a calf in their life. Meanwhile, we import food from the other side of the world. How’s that for “climate action”?

And let’s not even start on housing. Thousands of empty properties rot away while families are shoved into hotels and “temporary accommodation” that drags on for years. We’ve money for consultants, PR campaigns, and shiny vanity projects, but not for the basic dignity of a roof over people’s heads.

Healthcare? You could be dead before you’re seen. Waiting lists stretch for miles, ambulances are stuck outside A&E because there are no available beds, and front-line staff are burned out while ministers pat themselves on the back.

And yet, flick on the TV and you’ll see the same polished smiles and rehearsed lines: “We’re making progress.” Progress for who? Certainly not for the ordinary people carrying this country on their backs.

This isn’t the Ireland our parents and grandparents fought for. They built with nothing but grit, community, and faith that their children would have it better. Now their children and grandchildren are being squeezed until there’s nothing left to give.

So I ask… how long do we let this circus go on? How long before the Irish spirit, the same one that carried us through famine, poverty, and oppression, stands up and says loud and clear: enough is enough?

And as Granny Frass would say: “My dear, the politicians will tell ya the country’s booming… but the only thing booming is the potholes and their bank accounts. Don’t be fooled. Ireland’s heart is strong, it’s just the heads running it that are cracked!”

  1. I fear it’s the same problem everywhere, Mae.

    I call it the “Nuevomedievo”.

    1. That’s an interesting way to put it, Tony! I had to look “Nuevomedievo” 😂 It does seem to be sliding back into a kind of modern dark age!

Do you know know what tho, Mae? There is an undercurrent of something brewing. .. But having said that, I wonder if that is where it’s staying? I like the way the French kick-off when they’re not happy about something

    1. I feel that too, Joey! Makes me wonder what’s really bubbling under the surface…

  5. It is the same everywhere… what angers me here is that we are not united enough to fight the system and the powers that be feed on this disunity.
Look at Nepal at the moment. The youth are tired but that violence is also unwarranted…

    1. You’re so right, Iba. Disunity is exactly what keeps the system strong. The frustration is real, but like you said, violence only gives them more fuel. Change must come, but hopefully through a force that unites rather than breaks apart.

      1. I hope some kind of force rises up but not in my lifetime. For the sake of our future generations, I hope they rise up.

      2. Yes… I think that force is already stirring quietly, Iba. It might not look like a revolution at first, but change always begins in whispers.

  6. There is no more Ireland, no more countries, I think, just one world in great danger.

    1. Yes, that’s very true, René… borders start to feel meaningless when the whole planet is under threat. One world, one shared responsibility, and we’re running out of time to act like it.

  7. Do not forget bring in all of the “refugee’s” that get first class accommodation and the police turn a blind eye to their crimes
It is just as bad in Canada
Liberals are satanic creatures that destroy counties and we are witnessing it all over the world

    1. Joseph, that’s a whole bloody book 😂 I hear your frustration, there’s a lot of anger and fear around these issues worldwide. For me, I try to keep the focus on fairness and humanity (but trust me I have opinions!), because when politics turns people into ‘sides,’ we all lose. The bigger picture is that systems are broken, and ordinary people everywhere are the ones paying the price.

  8. In this post you could very well be speaking of where I live. I am hoping it has not gone so far it can’t be fixed. The world for sure is cracked right now and needs to be mended before it breaks.

    1. Mags, the cracks are showing everywhere… but I share your hope. Things may feel fragile, yet I still believe they can be mended if enough of us refuse to give up on change. Sometimes it’s in the breaking that real repair begins.

  9. We have many of the same problems here, Mae. The former “middle class” is now the working poor. Something has got to give…

    1. Yes, I think it’s the whole world, Jean. The middle class seems to be vanishing everywhere, slipping into struggle. Something has to shift, because people can only carry the weight for so long before it becomes too much to bear.

Heartbreaking but true 😔 Ireland’s spirit is strong, but people are struggling. It’s time for real change, honesty, and care for the ordinary families who keep this country going. 💚🇮🇪

    1. That’s so true, Willie 🧡 The strength of the people is there, but it feels like they’re being stretched too thin. Real care for families and fairness is what’s needed now, not empty words. 🇮🇪
