For me, it’s the eyes. Always the eyes.
If someone can’t look you straight in the eye, I immediately feel like something shady is going on. You can talk all you want, but if your gaze is darting around like a trapped fly, I’m not buying it. And don’t even get me started on the sunglasses crowd, those who wear them indoors, or keep them glued to their face like they’re auditioning for a spy film. What are you hiding? A guilty conscience? Or just a bad hangover?
Of course, not every glance down or pair of shades means someone’s a villain. Some people are shy, some are tired, and some just love their fashion accessories. But my instinct has always been that honesty doesn’t need a disguise. A person who can meet your eyes, without flinching, without hiding, is usually someone worth trusting.
So yes, if you’re talking to me, do me a favor: ditch the shades, lift your head, and let me see the truth in your eyes…
