Sun, Sand, and a Slightly Rebellious Home…

Daily writing prompt
What does your ideal home look like?

Oh, let me tell you… my dream home would be somewhere gloriously rural, with the kind of countryside charm that makes you want to put your feet up and never leave. And yes, it must be close enough to a beach that I can saunter down in flip-flops or bare feet, hair doing whatever it wants in the wind, no shame, no drama. Sun? Absolutely. Lots of sun, thank you very much. None of that gloomy, miserable drizzle nonsense unless it’s dramatic for effect.

Inside, it would be a glorious mess of comfort and chaos. Books piled everywhere like tiny towers of knowledge (or maybe just excuses for not tidying). Paintings leaning in corners, some upside-down, some not, because perfection is boring. Cushions everywhere, a chair that has my shape permanently molded into it, and a kitchen that smells perpetually of something delicious, maybe herbs, maybe bread, or perhaps a bit of chocolate guilt-free. The table would be ready for guests, friends, random strangers, and the odd squirrel if it comes highly recommended.

Outside, the garden would do whatever the garden wants, wildflowers cheekily nudging the paths, herbs staging minor rebellions, and a cat or two judging me silently from the fence. Waves would whisper from the nearby beach, the sun would lounge like a golden cat across the rooms, and I’d be free to wander, write, paint, nap, or argue with the universe about why it hasn’t delivered snacks yet.

In short: it wouldn’t just be a house. It would be a slightly rebellious, sun-soaked sanctuary for my soul, where laughter is loud, the wind has a say, and every corner invites mischief or daydreaming, or both.

  4. Dear Mae,

What a delightful portrait you’ve painted with your words! Your dream dwelling strikes me as the very embodiment of what I’ve long believed a home ought to be – not merely four walls and a roof, but a living, breathing space that reflects the soul within.

There’s something profoundly wise in your vision of controlled chaos. Those towers of books scattered about speak to a mind that values knowledge over tidiness, substance over appearance. I’ve always held that a house without books is like a room without windows – and yours would clearly let in all manner of light, both literal and metaphorical.

Your notion of a kitchen that perpetually smells of something delicious particularly appeals to me. Food shared is joy multiplied, and a table ready for “friends, random strangers, and the odd squirrel” suggests a generosity of spirit that would make any visitor feel welcomed. There’s democracy in such hospitality – no distinction between the expected guest and the surprise caller.

The rebellious garden you describe captures something essential about life itself. Nature, left to its own devices, often creates beauty more striking than any carefully manicured plan. Those “cheeky” wildflowers and herbs staging their “minor rebellions” remind us that the best things in life often come from allowing room for spontaneity and natural growth.

Your cats judging silently from the fence made me chuckle – there’s honesty in acknowledging that we all live under some form of gentle scrutiny, whether from felines or our own consciences.

Most of all, Mae, I admire your understanding that a true home should be a sanctuary for mischief and daydreaming alike. Too often we forget that a dwelling should nourish not just our bodies, but our spirits and imaginations as well.

May you find your sun-soaked haven, where laughter echoes loud and the wind indeed has its say.

With warm regards and hopes for your rebellious paradise,

    Bob

    1. Thank you so much, Bob! Your words are full of warmth, insight, and delight. I love the way you captured the heart of my vision: a home that nourishes the spirit, welcomes the unexpected, and celebrates both chaos and curiosity.
I am happy to know the rebellious garden, the mischievous cats, and the kitchen aromas resonated with you.
Here’s to gardens that rebel, cats that judge, kitchens that smell like home, and the kind of laughter that makes a house truly a home.

  8. I agree with you 💯 The beauty of simplicity often gets lost when we chase overly perfected, polished, and styled spaces—leaving no room for soul, character, or history.

    1. Exactly, Vidisha. Perfection can feel so empty without the quirks, history, and little imperfections that make a space come alive. Simplicity carries the soul that polish can never buy. Thank you for stopping by 🧡
