Cheaper Than Therapy…

Why do you blog?

Why do I blog? Good question. Some mornings I wonder that myself. I mean, it’s not like the internet is short on words, is it? Whole forests have been sacrificed to the ramblings of people who think the world is waiting breathlessly for their next pearl of wisdom. And yet… here I am, still typing.

For me, blogging isn’t about being an authority or having all the answers, far from it. It’s more like a release valve. A place where I can empty out the jumble in my head, tidy it up (a little), and send it out into the world before it clogs me up completely. Sometimes the words come out sharp, sometimes soft, sometimes funny, and maybe even heavy. But at least they’re out.

It’s also my way of rebelling, in a sense. I don’t like being told what to think, what to say, or how to live, and blogging allows me to carve out my own little space where I can say it my way. No interruptions, no edits, no one hovering over my shoulder correcting me. Just me, my thoughts, and the occasional cup of tea gone cold because I got carried away.

But maybe the best part is the conversation that happens after. A stranger reads something I’ve written and says, “Yes, I feel that too,” or “I never thought of it like that,” or even, “You’ve completely lost the run of yourself here.” That’s when I know blogging is more than just me shouting into the void. It’s connection. It’s community.

At the heart of it, I blog because it’s honest. It doesn’t have to be polished or perfect, just true to the moment. Life is messy, families are complicated, mornings are grumpy, and humour is often the only thread holding it all together. Blogging gives me the freedom to capture that mess, wrap it up with a wink or a sigh, and set it free.

So why do I blog? Because it keeps me sane. Because it helps me rebel in small, harmless ways. Because it creates unexpected conversations. And, let’s be real, because it’s cheaper than therapy and far less judgmental.

Mae 🧡

  1. Amidst all its down sides, traps and pitfalls, the internet does offer us the opportunity to reach out and connect with folk who otherwise may never have come within shouting distance. I like that.

    1. True Tony! Without it, we’d all just be shouting into the wind; at least here we find each other 🧡

  4. Mae,

Your words ring with the honesty of someone who understands that the best conversations often happen when we stop pretending we have everything sorted. There’s wisdom in recognising that our thoughts need somewhere to go before they pile up like autumn leaves in a cluttered mind.

I’ve always believed that the most valuable exchanges occur when people dare to be genuine rather than polished. Your digital parlour sounds like precisely the sort of place where real understanding takes root – messy, authentic, and wonderfully human.

Keep writing, Mae. The world needs more voices willing to trade perfection for truth, and cold tea for connection.

    1. Bob, what a beautifully written comment. 🧡 You’ve captured exactly what I hope this little space becomes: not polished perfection, but a place where honesty can spill out and meet others where they are. I love your autumn leaves image. That’s exactly how thoughts can feel sometimes, piling up until they need sweeping into words. I’ll keep writing, and I’m grateful for your encouragement. And yes, if the price of connection is a cup of cold tea now and then, I’ll happily pay it 😂

    1. Yes! I’m with you there. Half the time, I don’t know what I really think until I let it spill onto the page. Blogging feels like digging past all the noise and conditioning to get to the raw, untapped truth. A little act of rebellion in itself, really! 🧡

  9. Blogs can inform, inspire and teach! They can also include an awful lot of superfluous material …. Just like life! I’m subscribing

    1. Exactly! Blogging is a bit like life’s soup, a mix of the nourishing bits and the superfluous carrots we could probably do without 😄. But that’s what keeps it real. Delighted to have you along for the ride, welcome aboard, and thanks for subscribing! Mae 🧡

  10. Beautifully said, Mae. A blog really is about the community. It is one small space in the world in which you can say, “I had this thought, or this memory,” or “I wrote this book” or “I tried this recipe,” and be heard and understood. And on a good day, someone will say Yes! Me too :)

    1. Yes! That’s it exactly, Jean! It’s the little “me too” moments that make all the difference. Blogs are like tiny campfires where we gather to share our thoughts and memories, and somehow, it all connects us. I am grateful for this community and for voices like yours that keep the fire lit. 🧡

    1. Aw, thank you so much, Mags, for those kind words 🧡. Knowing my scribbles can resonate and maybe bring a little comfort or encouragement makes it all worthwhile. I think we’re all just doing our best to make sense of this world, and it helps to share the messy, honest bits along the way. I’m so grateful you’re here reading, and that my words reach you. Sending hugs and blessings right back xx
