Before Tea, Don’t Ask…

Daily writing prompt
How are you feeling right now?

Well, WP… really? You’re asking me how I feel this early? That’s cheeky. None of your business, honestly. It’s far too early in the morning for poking and prodding about my “feelings.” At this hour, I’m still negotiating with Heff over who owns the sunny patch on the floor, and I haven’t even decided what planet I’m on yet.

But since you’re so insistent, I’ll humor you. I feel… awake. Mostly. Grateful, even. Another spin of the great cosmic wheel, another chance to figure it all out, or at least stumble through it with a smidge of humor before reality comes barging in like it owns the place. The moods, the aches, the irritations, the tiny bursts of joy, they’ll show up later, WP, don’t you worry. Right now, there’s just me, my tea, and the quiet rebellion of being awake before the rest of the world bothers to notice.

I sip my tea, and I’ll have you know, WP, it’s a profound moment of triumph. The sun hasn’t quite decided where to hang its hat, the birds are still rehearsing their arias, and the house itself holds its breath, as if daring me to spill my tea or make a sound. Honestly, WP, it’s a little magical. You wouldn’t understand.

Look, I watch the light creep across familiar things, turning ordinary corners into secret kingdoms, and I listen to the faint stirrings of life around me, a spoon clinking somewhere, a dog sighing like it’s done with my nonsense, the wind gossiping with the trees outside. Even the cat seems to concede that I, too, am worthy of these early-morning victories.

So, WP, if you must know… I feel quietly triumphant. Mostly caffeinated. Delightfully unbothered by the chaos yet to come. And entirely aware that this little slice of morning magic is mine, for now, before the world finally drags itself out of bed and demands my attention.

Now, WP, you can take notes or not; it’s none of my business. But I suggest you sit back and appreciate the artistry of a human being sipping tea, staring at sunlight, and quietly winning the battle against an ungodly hour.

  3. Great post. Thoroughly agree!

(I need two mugs of tea on a morning before any kind of life can crawl into existence!)

  5. Mae,

Your early morning triumph strikes me as the finest sort of victory – quiet, personal, and entirely your own. There’s profound wisdom in claiming those stolen moments before the world awakens, when tea becomes ceremony and sunlight transforms the ordinary into something sacred.

I admire your negotiations with Heff over territorial rights and your rebellion against the tyranny of early enquiries. That you find magic in such simple things – the light creeping across familiar corners, the house holding its breath – speaks to a soul that understands life’s truest pleasures are often the smallest ones.

    Well done :-)

    1. Thank you, Bob. I appreciate your comments. Yes, those stolen moments are pure gold, though Heff still insists it’s his corner. I’m just the squatter with a kettle 😂 🧡
