Fair Play to Finnegan…

Fair Play to Finnegan – Not All Heroes Wear Capes, Some Carry Spanners!…

You know the saying, “blood is thicker than water”? Well, in Ireland, I’m starting to think tea is thicker than both, because when you’ve someone like Finnegan in your corner, who needs family drama?

I grew up with Finnegan. He’s a few years older than me and, like me, has seen his fair share of family chaos. We both know what it’s like when the ones who are supposed to help are off hiding faster than a farmer at tax time.

So, last week, my car decided to make a noise like a Ryanair flight to Lanzarote. The front wheel bearing started screaming. I was half-expecting air traffic control to show up in the driveway. Called the mechanic, and he is in Malta, of all places! Like… who even goes to Malta from Ireland? Was Spain too mainstream for him? Did Lanzarote run out of sunbeds and breakfast buffets? I was honestly ready to cry into my cuppa. Not because the car’s still broken, no, that I expected, but because he is probably sipping cocktails in flip-flops while I’m here Googling how to hot-wire a Yaris!

So I called my neighbor and asked about another mechanic. Enter Finnegan. The man, the myth, the mechanic (though he’ll deny it). He turns up like it’s nothing, rolls up his sleeves, and gets stuck in. Five or six hours, mind you, that’s not a favor, that’s a shift! And when he realized he needed a press for the job, did he give up? Not a hope. Off he goes, finds someone with the right gear, and comes back like the hero in a John Wayne film, except with oily hands and a spanner instead of a six-shooter.

And the best part? Not a word of complaint. No “you owe me,” no drama, just pure soundness. That’s what I call real family. Finnegan, you’re more of a brother than half the lads who share my DNA, and that’s saying something.

So here’s to you, Finnegan: the man who made sure my car no longer sounds like Dublin Airport on a bank holiday weekend. You’re a legend, a gent, and if I could bottle whatever makes you so decent, I’d be a millionaire by Friday.

Fair play, Finnegan. The world needs more of your kind and fewer dodgy wheel bearings!

  1. Sometimes you just hit lucky and get the right person at the right moment. It’s just a shame it doesn’t happen more often but, then again, maybe that would spoil the magic. The important thing is that the Yaris is humming again. Go for a spin?

    1. Ah, the magic of timing, like a cosmic wink from the universe (and not a Yaris wink 😂). You’re right, though, if it happened too often, we’d probably get complacent and stop noticing the sparkle. But for now, a humming car and a well-timed human? That’s worth celebrating. And yes, I will be taking it out for a whirl to let it stretch its wheels and blow off any lingering mechanical cobwebs😂

      2. Will do, Tony! I’ll give it a wave from the nearest hedge and maybe have a deep chat with a cow on your behalf. They’re great listeners, you know. I live in a rural area, so I drive in the countryside every day. 🧡

  3. Brilliant story! Finnegan sounds like an absolute gem – those are the people who make life worth living. There’s something special about neighbours who show up without being asked and just get stuck in. Proper legends like him are worth their weight in gold!

    1. Ah, thank you, Bob! Isn’t he just? Finnegan’s the kind of bloke who’d fix your roof, feed your dog, and leave you a bottle of something strong without ever expecting a thank you. Salt of the earth… with a dash of mystery and probably a toolkit older than time itself. They really don’t make them like that anymore, though I suspect he might’ve been sent by the universe just to show the rest of us up. 😅 Proper legend indeed!

  6. I believe Finnegan is the good karma reward for you listening to two people who needed to unburden. I firmly believe in what goes around comes around, and love hearing about good, altruistic karma coming back to give its blessing. 💖

    1. Ahhh, I love that, Sandy. Thank you 🧡. I felt that too, like the universe quietly nodding and saying, “Here, you’ve earned this one.” The other thing I thought about was what if the universe was testing me!

    1. Thank you, Mags! Yes, the world definitely needs more Finnegan’s, the kind of people who help without fuss or fanfare, just because it’s the right thing to do. I feel lucky to have crossed paths with him. I’m so glad you enjoyed reading it. Sending hugs right back to you xx 🧡
