Lessons from an Ornery Old Blind Man…

Life Lessons from a Blind Old Dog

I’m sitting here with Heff, the ornery old blind man himself. Fifteen years on this earth, and he’s still teaching me things I never thought I’d learn.

You see, Heff wasn’t always like this. Back in the day, he was my shadow, following me everywhere, full of attitude and independence. He still has the attitude, but now he depends on me for everything. And you know what? I don’t mind. Not even a little.

He pees on the floor because I’m gone all day. My fault, not his. He wakes me at 3 a.m. to go outside, and I don’t get mad anymore. I used to think I had zero patience, but Heff proved me wrong. Somehow, this little blind man softened me in ways I didn’t know were possible.

He’s teaching me lessons people never could. Lessons like:

Love isn’t tidy. It comes with messes on the floor and broken sleep.

Patience is a choice. You can decide not to get angry, and the world doesn’t end.

Control is an illusion. You can’t plan for everything, and that’s okay.

Maybe that’s why he’s still here, to remind me to slow down, forgive more, and love without conditions. Because when you strip everything else away, that’s what matters.

So, last night, when I gave him a big hug and he relaxed for two whole seconds before returning to his usual aloof self, I realized something: those two seconds were worth everything.

Here’s to you, Heff. The best teacher I never knew I needed.

Mae 🧡

This is so beautiful and real, Mae. Heff’s love and patience teach us what truly matters, unconditional love, grace, and letting go of control.

    1. Thank you, Willie. 🧡 Heff really does have a way of showing life’s lessons without saying a word—just by being himself. I think animals teach us more about love and grace than we could ever teach them.
