From Tacos to Tea – What Really Feeds Me…

Daily Prompt: What foods would you like to make?

Well, now, that depends entirely on my mood and what’s lurking in the back of the fridge. I like all kinds of food, and I’ve picked up tastes from everywhere I’ve lived or wandered. My go-to will always be Mexican. I’ve spent so much time there, it feels like a second kitchen. Give me something spicy and full of life, extra chili, hold the subtlety.

Indian food? Yes please. Thai? Absolutely. If it makes my eyes water and my nose run, chances are I’m going back for seconds.

But then there’s Irish food. The comfort food. The “wrap your cold toes by the fire” kind of food. A proper shepherd’s pie. Stew so thick the spoon stands up in it. Brown bread still warm from the oven with real butter that melts faster than your resolve. It’s not flashy or fiery, but it’s grounding. It reminds me who I am and where I come from, even if I spent half my life trying to outrun both.

But if we’re asking what feeds my soul, that’s harder. I’m not sure food alone does the job. It’s the making that sometimes fills the gap, cooking for people I care about, sharing something warm when life’s cold, or just chopping onions in peace when the world’s too loud.

Maybe it’s not just the food, but the memories in it. The smells that hit before the first bite. The people I remember while stirring the pot. The laughter, the tears, the healing, all folded in like secret ingredients.

Still, I won’t lie… a proper taco or a bowl of buttery colcannon can feel pretty close to spiritual.

    1. Right? Creamy mash, buttery cabbage, maybe a sneaky bit of scallion… it’s like a hug from Granny in a bowl! 😋 Pure Irish comfort food.🧡

      1. Right! I discovered on my own, looking for recipes that have your comfort food element and it totally hit the spot. Unhealthy as hell, but it tastes so darned good that I can overlook that part. 💙

      2. Exactly! Sometimes the soul needs buttery, carby comfort more than it needs kale. 😂 It’s like a warm, edible hug, and honestly, a little “unhealthy” joy now and then is its own kind of health. 🧡

  2. Shepherds pie – sprinkled with cheese, yes please. Makes me think of autumn, leaves falling as we settle in for winter. Perfect, homely meal 🥰

    1. Yes! Shepherd’s pie with cheese on top is like a cuddle in casserole form. 🍂 There’s something about that crispy golden top and hearty filling that just feels like autumn. Total comfort food, and the perfect excuse to light a fire and pretend you’re hibernating. 🥰🧡

    1. Thanks Jean, It’s not always about the food, is it? It’s about presence.🧡
