Muck, Magic, and a Plate of Real Food…

Daily Prompt: Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

For me, it’s Granny Frass’s real food. The kind you yanked straight outta the ground, gave a half-hearted shake to get the dirt off, and into the pot it went. No labels, no expiry dates, and if a worm popped out, well, extra protein.

I know everyone expects the Irish to say bacon and cabbage, and don’t get me wrong, I’d wrestle a man for a plate of it on a cold day. But it’s the homegrown stuff that does it for me. Spuds you had to chase around the sink because they were still alive, carrots shaped like rude body parts, and cabbage so fresh it tried to crawl off the table.

Processed food? Tastes like regret and disappointment. Real food tastes like home, muck and all.

  3. Hi M,
For me, real food always wins out, but it’s sometimes the way real food is cooked, which can remind me of how mum and gran cooked certain things, when I was young.
Funny thing is, cereals can also transport me back, even the smell of them, as well as porridges/puddings.
When I was young my fave was Ambrosia rice pudding.
When I ate it, up till my late 20s, I would always be transported back to childhood.
Now I don’t do Rice or Cows milk, but I have a photographic taste memory, for anything I’ve eaten.

    1. Hi there,
I love this — it’s true how certain foods and smells can catapult us right back to a different time. There’s a real kind of magic in those simple moments. Homemade rice pudding was a classic in our house, especially if someone wasn’t well… it was the official ‘get better soon’ food!

And you’ve nailed it with the photographic taste memory, I know exactly what you mean. Even if we no longer eat those things, the memory is so vivid, it’s like you can almost taste it in your mind. Funny how food can hold stories and people in it. Thanks for sharing this. It made me smile and think of a few childhood kitchen table moments of my own.

      Mae 🧡🧡🧡
