The Letter I’ll Never Send..

The Letter I’ll Never Send (But Wrote Anyway)

Dear Family,

Let’s not pretend this will come as a shock. I’ve been too quiet for too long, and if you’ve been paying any attention at all, you’ll know silence is just grief with a gag in its mouth. And now, I’m done with gags. I’m writing this not because I think it’ll change you, it won’t but because it might just change me.

This is the letter you’ll never get through the post, but might stumble across online one day. Maybe you’ll laugh, maybe you’ll rage, maybe you’ll roll your eyes and say, ‘There she goes again’. And you’d be right, I am going. I’m going all the way into truth.

Let’s talk about inheritance – not the land, not the money (what a joke) but the twisted heirlooms you handed down: silence, denial, power plays and the constant rewriting of history. You passed those on like family silver, polished up with fake smiles and ‘just-get-on-with-it’ mantras.

But I didn’t sign up to play the scapegoat in your family fantasy. I didn’t ask for the emotional debris, the whispered alliances or the kind of cruelty that hides behind ‘we were only doing our best’. Best? No. You were doing what served you. And when I spoke up, when I questioned things, suddenly I was the enemy. How convenient.

The truth is, I spent years trying to belong to people who only made room for versions of me they could control – quieter, smaller and agreeable. I shape-shifted so much I forgot what I actually looked like. But not anymore. I’m done being your easy target.

You don’t have to like my truth. You don’t even have to read it. But here it is, out in the open, where shame can’t survive. You gaslit me. You isolated me. You made choices behind backs and under tables. And now that the tables are turning, you look surprised.

I’m not writing this for revenge. I’m writing it for clarity, for closure and maybe- just maybe – for someone else out there stuck in a similar mess. Someone who’s been told they’re ‘too sensitive’ when really, they’re just finally awake.

So go on, roll your eyes and call it dramatic. But deep down, you know I’m not the problem. I’m the mirror. And I’m done turning it away.

Sincerely,
The Difficult One
(aka the one with the spine)

Lesson of the Day:

If your truth burns bridges, it’s only because you were the one carrying the matches, the fuel and the unpaid emotional toll. Let it burn. You were never meant to live in someone else’s version of you.

Your turn:

  1. This one resonates with me, not just for me, but for Lois too.
She wanted to send, but hasn’t, after not seeing the point, or the fact that they will only lie to her in response.

I feel you on this M, the mind does boggle.
I just can’t see why people won’t make the time to really get deep and address the obvious elephants in the many rooms.
I know, I know, we are all different.
However, I admire your tenacity and resilience, in dealing with your relatives.

Ours will obviously say the same about us, Lois’ brother actually did to her.
Family is what you make it, let’s be the sincere birds of a feather, flocking together over miles of cyber-space.

I’ve written a few, hard-copy letters and later emails, all met with similar responses…crickets and toads…silence of the numpties.
A couple have been bold enough to tell me not to contact them, I respect that, whereas the rest use silence, in their weapon against this truth-sayer.

We stand with you M, well done for sharing this.
I hope at least one of them sees this post, and contacts you with sincerity, and a willingness to listen to you, and share their truths.
Whether you come to an agreement or not.
It’s always good to know where you stand with others, and to be heard.

    Love and Blessings.
    Phil.

    1. Phil, your words feel so true. Silence really can be the loudest, most painful response of all. It’s heartbreaking when those we reach out to choose walls over bridges. But as you said, family is what we make it, and finding those genuine connections, even across miles and screens, is everything.

I admire how you honor boundaries when asked, yet still keep showing up with truth and love. That’s strength wrapped in grace. Here’s hoping the walls crack just enough for some honesty to seep through, even if it’s only a start.

Thank you for standing with me and for being that sincere bird of a feather. We keep flying together. 🫂
      Much love xxx
      M 🧡

      1. Thanks M,
Admittedly, some things needed to be said, therefore, initially, when they ‘attempted’ to shut me down, I ignored and shared my truths.
However, you’re right, you can call it respecting boundaries.
I just stay well clear, but as I’ve always said, still available if they ever needed help.

Together in the V formation, makes the flight, especially when it’s long, so much easier. 😉
        Much Love honey. xx

      2. Absolutely love your take on this. Speaking your truth is never easy, especially when others try to silence it, but I’m glad you stood firm. Staying clear while still holding the door open if needed? That’s grace. And yes, that V formation… It’s all about shared strength and taking turns carrying the weight. Much love right back at you Phil xx
        M 🧡
